Sede vacante is the time when the Chair of Peter is empty. Normally we would consider this the time after a Pope has died or resigned until the time when the new Pope accepts the office. There are some who believe that there has not been a valid pope since Pius X!!. Many are lured into this position thinking it explains all of the troubles in the Church.
